Repairing a Crack in a Knife – Nakiri/Slicing Cleaver

We noticed a crack/hairline fracture on this small slicing cleaver/ Nakiri style blade as we sharpened it up. We suggested to remove the crack in order to prevent a larger fail later that would ruin the life of the knife.

We started off by marking the area with the crack, then grinding the edge back until the crack was gone. We then outlined the blade minus the 4 or so millimeters that would need to be taken off the remainder of the blade to compensate , and grind it down with a stone grinding wheel. When the stock removal was finished with the stone, we switched to our 4×36″ belt grinder with a 120 3M ceramic belt to properly establish the new profile bevel and sharpness. We then used a Chosera 1K stone to clean up the belt grinder marks and finished on a buffing wheel with compound. The cut test shows the crack was successfully removed!

Cracks can lead to a much bigger issue if not dealt with early on
